Call for proposals – 3D competition 2024

28.01.2024

Dear Nano community,

We are looking forward to the annual Nano center's conference.
Following the academic school year schedule, we are considering holding the conference in early May (and will not be held on April 17-18). An exact date will be announced as soon as possible.

Call for proposals – 3D
For the second time, we are holding the 3D Nano-Art competition!
This is your opportunity to design and present a 3D model based on your research, and win a 3D printer

3D printing enables freedom in creating complex models, not accessible by conventional manufacturing techniques, limited only by imagination. In this competition, we welcome you to explore your creativity in developing an artistic impression based on your research as a 3D-printed structure. Any creative ideas are welcome. Emphasis will be placed on the value added by 3D printing, relevance to your research, functionality, and, of course, creativity and aesthetic value.

A few possible examples are –
Converting a 2D microscope image to a 3D printed model, highlighting the 3D nature of this sample.

  • A 3D representation illustrating complex concepts of your research - molecular structures, photonic crystals, devices, and more.
  • Additional original ideas are encouraged.

Submission process:

Initial submission of a concept by: February 10, 2024.

  • The concept will include: a sketch or a picture of the idea and a brief description of the initial design of the structure (up to 100 words).
  • It is recommended to set a 30 minute meeting with the 3D printing center staff to consolidate an initial idea before the submission – huji3dpc@mail.huji.ac.il  |  02-6585719.
  • 10 works will be selected and awarded the opportunity to present in the upcoming Nano Center conference.
  • Each selected work will receive, free of charge, three hours of design work with the center's 3D unit team, to develop your concept into a 3D model as well as 250 ILS worth of 3D printing
  • Available printing materials are: plastic and plaster.
  • Additional time or printing is available at researcher's standard prices. The printing funds are usually enough for FDM prints.
  • The works selected will award the students with a presentation of the 3D printing center's capabilities, and a short course on 3D CAD using SolidWorks.

Please note:

  • The competition 3D models will be presented during the conference.
  • It is possible to propose a project built on previously submitted and developed work - provided that it has a development compared to the previous model.
  • A special committee will judge the works.
  • The prize for the first-place winner - a 3D printer.
  • Kindly be aware that submitting your 3D Printed Nano Art provides the HUCNN with full rights to use it for PR publications after the event. HUCNN is eligible to publish works, fully acknowledging the person who submitted the artwork. The material may be published in prints and/or may be found on the center's website.

Please submit the Initial submission by e-mail to karinc@savion.huji.ac.il

Thanks to the team of the 3D unit for managing, designing, and leading the competition -
