The role of the quantum features of light in strong-field processes has remained largely unexplored. In a series of recent works, we developed the quantum-optical theory of attosecond processes and applied it to high harmonic generation (HHG). In this talk, I will show how correlations between emitters induce correlations between emitted harmonics. Furthermore, I will present recent predictions about the spectrum of HHG, and its dependence on the photon statistics of the driving light. Specifically, thermal and squeezed light substantially increase the efficiency of HHG compared to classical (coherent-state) light of the same intensity. I will discuss ongoing experiments by us and by other groups around the world. I will wrap up with outlook on the bigger picture of strong-field quantum optics and its prospects for engineering of quantum many-photon states of light and creation of entangled attosecond pulses.
